Oro del Desierto is a family business dedicated to the production of organic extra virgin olive oil in Tabernas, Almería, in one of the most unique olive-growing environments in Spain. The project belongs to the Alonso family, whose relationship with agriculture and oil production takes place on the El Vicario estate, located in the heart of the Tabernas Desert.

The modern history of the project began at the end of the 20th century, when the family committed to transforming and modernizing the farm to gear it toward the production of high-quality EVOO. The new chapter for Oro del Desierto began in 1999, incorporating a philosophy based on comprehensive process control, organic farming, and the search for oils capable of expressing the unique conditions of this Almerian territory.

Currently, brothers Rafael, Juan, and Ramón Alonso represent the generation that continues to develop the family project. The fields and the oil mill are managed jointly, allowing for direct control over the main stages of production: cultivation, maturation monitoring, harvesting, processing, storage, and bottling.

Organic production is one of the great pillars of Oro del Desierto. The family has committed to an agricultural model adapted to a particularly arid territory, seeking to use resources efficiently and preserve the fertility and biodiversity of the estate. This combination of family tradition, innovation, and sustainability has made Oro del Desierto one of the most recognized Almerian EVOO firms, with numerous national and international awards.

Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Picual and Lechín: four varieties under the Tabernas sun

Oro del Desierto works mainly with four olive varieties: Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Picual, and Lechín de Granada. Each one has different characteristics, and the mill uses them both to produce monovarietals and to create blends, seeking to leverage the complementary qualities of each olive.

Arbequina makes it possible to obtain more delicate and aromatic oils, generally with a sweet entry and fruity notes. Hojiblanca provides greater complexity and vegetal nuances, while Picual offers structure, intensity, and a characteristic balance between bitterness and pungency. To these is added the Lechín de Granada, a traditional variety of the southeastern peninsula that helps reinforce the range's connection to its territory.

One of the house's most representative oils is Oro del Desierto Coupage, made by combining different varieties grown on the estate. Alongside it, the mill develops monovarietals that allow for the individual appreciation of each olive's personality and to see how they respond under the particular climatic conditions of the Tabernas Desert.

The harvest begins early, selecting the moment when each variety presents the desired characteristics. The olives are picked directly from the tree and transported quickly to the mill, located on the estate itself. This proximity makes it possible to reduce the interval between harvesting and milling and to work with fruit that is fresh and in good condition.

Extraction is carried out using exclusively mechanical procedures at low temperatures, carefully controlling the different stages to preserve the aromas and natural compounds present in the olives. Once obtained, the oil is stored under controlled conditions until it is bottled. The entire process is aimed at conveying to each EVOO both the characteristics of the variety and the personality of the environment in which it has been grown.

Finca El Vicario: organic olive groves in the heart of the Tabernas Desert

The territory is arguably the element that most distinguishes Oro del Desierto. Its olive groves are located at Finca El Vicario, in Tabernas, within a semi-arid landscape characterized by extremely low rainfall and an extraordinary number of sunshine hours per year. These unusual conditions have forced the Alonso family to develop farming methods specifically adapted to water scarcity.

The estate spans approximately 100 hectares, much of which is dedicated to organic olive groves. The trees grow in a very dry climate, with more than 3,000 hours of sunlight annually and rainfall that can hover around 200 millimeters per year. While these conditions significantly reduce the presence of certain pests and diseases associated with more humid environments, they simultaneously make efficient water management essential.

To adapt to this environment, Oro del Desierto uses localized drip irrigation, providing the trees only with the water they need and reducing losses. Organic farming is complemented by practices aimed at maintaining soil fertility and leveraging resources generated during agricultural activities and oil production.

Sustainability also extends to the mill. The family has developed a model based on the use of by-products, utilizing materials from the olive groves and the production process to reduce waste and return organic matter to the land. The incorporation of renewable energy and various efficiency measures rounds out a philosophy that is particularly consistent with the natural limitations of the environment.

The Tabernas landscape is thus inseparable from its oils. Abundant sun, extreme aridity, sharp thermal contrasts, and scant rainfall dictate the development of the Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Picual, and Lechín varieties. Rather than attempting to replicate the conditions of other olive-growing regions, Oro del Desierto has built its identity precisely around this extreme territory, making the Tabernas Desert one of the primary hallmarks of its extra virgin olive oils.
